Senior Embedded Software Engineer

MetaPower, LLC is a Seattle startup building the future of Intelligent Wireless Power for vertical applications.  We are looking for a contract Senior Embedded Software Engineer whose area of expertise includes embedded software design, development, verification, and test.  As a Senior Embedded Software Engineer, you will engage with an experienced cross-disciplinary team to conceive and design lower layer BSP, drivers, embedded firmware, as well as higher layer control and application software. You will work closely with other subsystem teams at MetaPower as well as engage third party suppliers to drive key aspects of product definition, design, optimization, implementation and test.

Principal Responsibilities:
  • Develop/modify BSP code: this can include bootloaders, device drivers, kernel and device tree support

  • Perform initial hardware bring-up and system integration

  • Maintain a continuous integration environment, including packaging and deployment of software releases

  • Work in an environment in which proper software version control practices are required

  • Develop application layer software that may operate across a distributed network of platforms

  • Authoring design documents and test plans

  • Participate and contribute to software architecture for a variety of hardware components

  • Implement prototype software on prototype hardware with production intent

  • Interact with internal and external customers as needed.

  • Applies an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to plan, design, develop and verify a lifecycle balanced system of systems and system solutions

  • Performs analyses to optimize total system architecture for affordability, safety, reliability, maintainability, testability, regulatory, and certification

  • Teach/mentor junior engineers and technicians on system measurements and review test results

  • Collaborate closely and drive the resolution of technical issues by working with cross-functional teams such as RF, industrial design, mechanical, EE, architecture, product design, NPI, and supply chain

  • Participate in collaborative design reviews of RF and EE designs to ensure the system functions as designed prior to prototype fabrication

  • Perform lab measurements and testing as needed to validate the HW+SW system design and resolve any issues

  • Track test progress, bugs, and fixes and produce regular written and verbal progress reports

  • Design, implement, debug, and characterize embedded systems with end-to-end ownership of software system design from concept to production


Basic Qualifications:
  • BS in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering

  • 7+ years professional product development experience as an Embedded Software Engineer developing production software.

  • Strong proficiency with C/C++, Linux and Windows OS and assorted scripting languages

  • Experience leading technical teams, cross-functional groups and vendors against project plans

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Comprehensive understanding of the product development, validation, and support life cycle for a complex vertical product

  • Ability to meet MetaPower, customer and/or government security screening and background check requirements are required for this role 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in CS, CE, EE or related 

  • Experience with software development targeted for embedded software systems

  • Working knowledge of I2C, SPI and UART serial communications

  • Familiarity with multi-processor systems and communications

  • Experience seeing a product from early design all the way through being shipped and supported to a real world customer

  • Knowledge of Linux kernel internals (scheduling, memory management, IPC, file systems, etc), as well as the ‘systemd’ suite

  • Knowledge of networking and associated network protocols

  • Experienced with low latency and high data throughput architectures

  • Experience in developing, modifying, and debugging drivers, bootloaders, or board support packages (BSPs).

  • Creating unit tests and user-interfaces for hardware bring-up

  • Understanding schematics, experience with logic analyzers, JTAG, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers

  • Experience with interpreting datasheets and developing device drivers for sensors and ICs

  • Experience with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and associated vendor SDKs

  • Experience with ARM-CortexM and ARM-CortexA based processors, GNU toolchains/IDEs

  • Familiarity with CMake

  • Software Security experience:  authentication/encryption, hardware accelerators, security fundamentals

  • Bare metal and Embedded RTOS application architecture

  • Demonstrated experience bringing new product categories to market

  • Experience leading a team of engineers and technicians

  • Experience leveraging technical and product development experience and strong cross-collaboration relationships to influence product direction

  • Experience running signal integrity simulations
